The Verdict Is In! Henna Gloss Treatment Results
I'm finally able to weigh in on my experience with the henna gloss treatment, and it’s taken so long because I’ve fallen in love with my hair!
The treatment has given my hair everything I wanted and more. It’s been about 3 weeks since I did the treatment and I’ve only washed my hair once – mind you, 2 weeks is an absurd length of time for me to go without washing my hair. With washday being tomorrow, I figured it was time to document how excited I’ve been.
Within the first week, I noticed my shedding ended completely. I could do my twist-out without mini-mounds of my hair left behind. I also noticed that the moisture level was superb! I didn’t have to utilize the L.O.C (Leave-In/Liquid. Oil. Cream) method daily to infuse my hair with moisture as I had before. Overall my hair’s manageability increased tremendously. The time that it took to set my twist-out decreased and my hair no longer tangled. And whether the added thickness is only an illusion of the henna or the real thing, the effect looks amazing. This was only the first week before I washed my hair.
When I washed my hair, some remnants of the dye washed out as well. I figured that was normal, especially since shampoos would wash chemical rinses out over time as well. The color coming off actually gave me hope that my hair color altered. I was very careful about the products that I used. LIMITED PROTEINS. I constructed my washday around products that contained 1-2 protein ingredients, and that was hard work – most companies find value in providing products with ‘strengthening elements’ and they can accomplish that by stuffing them with protein.
FYI: Any ingredient that has ‘hydrolyzed’ attached to it contains protein.
That washday resulted in a BOMB twist-out on the first day! That’s a real rarity for me. I was also pleasantly shocked to notice the shade of my hair had changed. My hair was no longer a dusty shade of dark brown, but now more rich and vibrant in its hue.
My coworker, cosmetology student, and soon-to-be stylist, Wendy, warned me that henna STAINS hair with its dark color. I knew it stained surfaces, nails, and skin, but for some reason, the idea that it would stain my hair escaped me. In my case, I’m not worried about it. I love the color, and when my dusty shade begins to grow at the roots it might look cool. With the staining element in mind, I would say that anyone who might eventually want to dye their hair lighter should not use henna. It will make the daunting process of lightening much harder.
The deal breaker for me was the reduced maintenance that I had to give my tresses. It has become a chore to do the LOC method every day to achieve a successful hairstyle. The first 2 days after my wash day, I didn’t need to apply any product to my hair while setting my twist-out. No extra moisture was necessary. And in the days following, I still refrained from my usual overload of oils, butter, and creams.
As I said previously, going more than one week without washing my hair is abnormal for me. But my hair had been cooperating and I figured, why ruin a good thing? But now, it feels filthy, much dirtier than usual. I imagine it has a lot to do with the oils I applied to my scalp, the time it had been since its last wash, and the notion that there is a light layer of henna is still sticking to my hair.
For this washday, I’ve decided to use a clarifying shampoo along with products that contain a bit more protein than the last time I washed. In trying to keep my hair’s homeostasis, I know that I need to begin to reintroduce protein to my wash regimen.
Overall, can you tell how thrilled I am with my results? In my previous post, I speculated that I would alternate between this treatment every two weeks. After seeing the results, I understand why others do it once every couple of months. Now, I would recommend the same thing.
I’m curious to see how my hair reacts to this washday and the impending work week. As always, I’ll be sure to let you know!
